Uplift Response of Strip Anchors in Sand Using Fem

چکیده

The load displacement relationship of shallow rigid strip anchors embedded in sands and subjected to uplift pressures has been examined by using the finite element method. The soil medium is modeled as a linear elastic-perfect plastic material following Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion and an associated flow rule. The computed load displacement response is presented in non-dimensional form. The ultimate failure load is expressed in the form of non-dimensional uplift factor Fγ, the variation of which is plotted as a function of soil friction angle (φ) and the embedment ratio (λ) of the anchor. The magnitudes of Fγ, as well as the displacements of anchor at failure are found to increase with the increases in the values of the anchor embedment ratio and the angle of shearing resistance of soils. In all the cases, it was seen that even at complete collapse, the soil mass lying just vertically above the anchor remains more or less non plastic. The failure of the anchor occurs on account of the development of a thin curved plastic shear zone emerging from the bottom of the anchor and then extending up to the ground surface. Analysis of Inclined Strip Anchors in Sand Based on the Block Set Mechanism

Anchors are widely used in foundation systems for structures requiring uplift resistance. As demonstrated by numerous theoretical and experimental studies on the subject, uncertainty remains as to both the theoretical uplift capacity of anchors in idealised soils and the suitability of the various modelling assumptions in capturing the responses observed during tests. This study, which deals ex...

A laboratory Study on Reinforced Expansive Soil with Granular Pile Anchors

Granular Pile Anchor (GPA) considers one of the solution foundation techniques, designed to mitigate the lifting of the sole resulting from expansive soils. This study work is to investigate the uplift movement response of (GPA) in expansive soil. The laboratory tests have been performed on an experimental. The effects of several parameters, such as length (L) of (GPA) and diameter (D), the thi...

Undrained uplift capacity of deeply embedded strip anchors in non- uniform soil

This paper presents new theoretical predictions of the undrained uplift capacity of deeply embedded inclined strip anchors in a soil stratum with a linear variation of strength with depth. Rigorous bounds on the theoretical uplift capacity are presented using upper and lower bound limit analysis. The effects of the strength gradient on the normalised uplift capacity and the predicted failure me...

Uplift Response of Horizontal Strip Anchor Plates in Cohesionless Soil

Anchor plates may be made of steel plates, precast concrete slabs, poured concrete slabs, timber sheets and so forth. In this study, uplift resistance of strip anchor plates embedded in cohesion less soils was assessed by conducting previous works. The previous experimental works mentioned that behavior of horizontal strip anchor plates embedded in cohesion less soil has been assessed by small-...

A Study on Load Capacity of Horizontal and Inclined Plate Anchors in Sandy Soils

Foundations of structures which are subjected to uplift loading require anchoring systems to resist pullout loads. Such anchors can be broadly classified as gravity anchors, pile anchors and plate anchors. Plate anchors can be circular, square or strip in shape. The loading applied on plate anchors can be vertical, inclined or horizontal depending on the anchor orientation. In this study, vario...
